Aircraft Use
Employees using their personally owned, rented, or borrowed aircraft traveling on Cornell-related business must maintain a Commercial Pilot license with an instrument flight rating under the FAA Regulations, and any flight conducted shall be done under an instrument flight plan. Employees must provide evidence of aircraft liability insurance with minimum coverage of $10,000,000 per occurrence with no per passenger sub-limits.
Any pilot that does not meet these requirements must submit an exception request to Risk Management.
You must provide to Risk Management and Insurance a certificate of insurance that includes the following provisions:
- Cornell University must be named as an Additional Insured
- Provide Cornell University a Waiver of Subrogation
- Be endorsed to be primary and non-contributory to any insurance carried by the university, before the first trip occurs. If your coverage changes, you must provide a copy of the certificate of insurance to the person who processes your travel and expense report.
Your reimbursement will be calculated using the IRS mileage rates for personally-owned vehicles, and it may not exceed the cost of economy air travel. To apply for any reimbursement, each pilot must demonstrate that they are a Commercial Pilot under the FAA Regulations. You are not allowed to carry passengers during university-related travel.
Departments that engage aircraft charters on Cornell related business should work with procurement services and the risk management department.
